FAQs

Some frequently asked questions:

1. Do you play weddings and private events?

YES! All of our bands are available for weddings. We have played numerous weddings for swing dancers, and non-dancers alike. We can provide elegant dinner music straight from the swing era, and then switch gears to get the whole party dancing, whether your guests are already swing dancers or not!

2. Do offer groups smaller than 7-pieces?

We are happy to provide trios and quartets for private events. We can provide groups that capture the gypsy-jazz sounds of Django Reinhardt, or the small group sounds of the Benny Goodman Trio. We generally shy away from doing smaller groups for dance events, because we feel the smaller size compromizes danceability, however please contact us about your needs and we'd be happy work with you.

3. Are you available gigs outside of Los Angeles?

Of course! We will play anywhere people hire us - including London, Seoul, New York, Washington DC, Seattle, Denver, San Francisco, Cleveland, Rochester, Knoxville, and Phoenix.  To keep costs lower, we generally travel with a core of our regular musicians, supplemented by local musicians, however that depends on the locality in question. Please contact us to talk about details and get a quote.

4. Can you provide swing dancers for lessons or exhibitions at private events?

The Campus Five is proud to count among its fans the top swing dancers in the world. We can contract swing dancers to provide lessons for your guests, or perform exhibitions that will entertain your guests.

The Jonathan Stout Orchestra, featuring Hilary Alexander is the nation’s premier swing dance big band. Like an upsized version of the Campus Five, the Orchestra showcases the big band sound of the late 1930’s and early 1940’s, and is the most danceable big band anywhere. The 15-piece Orchestra captures the unmatched excitement and true rhythmic pulse of the Swing-era. The band follows the templates of Benny Goodman and Count Basie – orchestras that are aggressive and tight, and filled with all-star soloists that bring the fire on every song, regardless of tempo.

The Orchestra was founded because promoters demanded a full big band that was as danceable and exciting as the Campus Five. Jonathan and Hilary responded with a big band that was designed to be the ultimate swing dance orchestra. Like the Campus Five, the Orchestra has the true the sound and feel of the Swing-era, because that is what makes real Swing music so danceable in the first place.

The Orchestra has been featured at Swing dance events across the country: (partial list)
Camp Hollywood / National Jitterbug Championships (Los Angeles)
The International Lindy Hop Championships (Washington, D.C.)
Lindy Focus (Asheville, N.C.)
Midsummer Night Swing at Lincoln Center in 2005, 2011, and 2015. (NYC)
Rhythmic Arts Festival (San Diego)
All Balboa Weekend (Cleveland)
