FAQs

Some frequently asked questions:

1. Do you play weddings and private events?

YES! All of our bands are available for weddings. We have played numerous weddings for swing dancers, and non-dancers alike. We can provide elegant dinner music straight from the swing era, and then switch gears to get the whole party dancing, whether your guests are already swing dancers or not!

2. Do offer groups smaller than 7-pieces?

We are happy to provide trios and quartets for private events. We can provide groups that capture the gypsy-jazz sounds of Django Reinhardt, or the small group sounds of the Benny Goodman Trio. We generally shy away from doing smaller groups for dance events, because we feel the smaller size compromizes danceability, however please contact us about your needs and we'd be happy work with you.

3. Are you available gigs outside of Los Angeles?

Of course! We will play anywhere people hire us - including London, Seoul, New York, Washington DC, Seattle, Denver, San Francisco, Cleveland, Rochester, Knoxville, and Phoenix.  To keep costs lower, we generally travel with a core of our regular musicians, supplemented by local musicians, however that depends on the locality in question. Please contact us to talk about details and get a quote.

4. Can you provide swing dancers for lessons or exhibitions at private events?

The Campus Five is proud to count among its fans the top swing dancers in the world. We can contract swing dancers to provide lessons for your guests, or perform exhibitions that will entertain your guests.

Jonathan Stout and his Campus Five, featuring Hilary Alexander is the nation’s premier swing dance band. Showcasing the small-group sound of the late 1930’s and early 1940’s, the Campus Five is the most danceable swing band anywhere. The 7-piece Campus Five captures the true sound of the Swing-era, with all the energy and excitement that inspired millions to dance. Influences include the Benny Goodman Sextet, Artie Shaw's Grammercy Five, Count Basie's Kansas City Six, and the Harlem-based small groups of Illinois Jacquet, Cootie Williams, Coleman Hawkins, and Hot Lips Page.

Both founders (Hilary and Jonathan) have been dedicated Swing dancers for over 20 years, and the relationship between Swing music and Swing dance informs all aspects of the Campus Five. Song selection, tempo, song length and feel are all chosen with danceability in mind. The Campus Five’s three albums, “Jammin’ the Blues”, “Crazy Rhythm”, and “Moppin’ and Boppin’”, are favorites of Swing DJs and Swing Dance Instructors all over the globe. The Campus Five have been featured at many of the premier Swing dance events around the world, and are known for their unparalleled competition music, which inspires dancers to new heights.
